HISTORIC YUMA

Let's start with the penitentiary built in the 1850's. It overlooks the Yuma crossing where many of the early settlers crossed the Gila and Colorado River.  Not a place I would have liked to have been in the summer. (or ever for that matter)

THE GILA RIVER AND COLORADO RIVER JOIN HERE WHERE SETTLERS CROSSED BY BARGE.
WHO IS THIS CRAZY MAN????
YUMA PENITENTIARY WATCH TOWER

TOO BAD WE DON'T USE THIS SYSTEM IN OUR PRISONS TODAY

Next we crossed a bridge (silver one) built in 1915. It was the last link in the highway system from coast to coast and is called
The "Ocean to Ocean Bridge."
We found a beautiful park called The Wetlands Park that has bike trails and runs along the river. In it there was a wonderful statue of a Mormon Battalion soldier. We even found a plaque that had Abraham Day's name on it.

Notice Abraham Day and Neuman Bulkley on this roster.

THIS IS THE PRODUCE CAPITAL OF THE WORLD. ACRES OF PRODUCE GROW AND ARE HARVESTED HERE.
This is an interesting mix of 5 different lettuces planted in rows. I wonder do they do that so they can make a mixed garden package right from the field?
THERE IS LOTS OF COTTON GROWING HERE
BAILED COTTON READY TO BE SHIPPED
RESIDUE OF COTTON. I AM NOT SURE WHAT THEY DO WITH IT. LOOKS LIKE GREY SAND PILES.

ACRES OF CELERY

PALM TREES   WITH DELICIOUS DATES GROWING ON THEM.
IT IS AMAZING TO SEE HOW THEY PICK AND PACKAGE ALL THE PRODUCE RIGHT IN THE FIELD. IT IS WRAPED AND BOXED AND SENT TO REFRIGERATION RIGHT AWAY. THEN OFF TO COSTCO OR SOME OTHER GROCERY STORE AND ONTO YOUR TABLE.
SO MAKE SURE YOU WASH BEFORE COOKING!!!!!

NEAT AND TIDY ROWS AND NO WEEDS
